How far Katy actually is from Murphy Road
The drive is not the same for the whole of Katy, and the difference decides what we are useful for.
The Fort Bend County communities south of Interstate 10, including Cinco Ranch, Seven Meadows and Grand Lakes, sit on the Westpark and Grand Parkway corridors. That is roughly twenty to twenty-five miles from Stafford without going through Houston at all. The City of Katy itself sits north of I-10, where Harris, Fort Bend and Waller counties meet, and is further again.
In practice: a scheduled replacement, duct job or remodel in southern Katy is straightforward to plan and to price. An emergency at four on an August afternoon is a conversation about a realistic window rather than a promise of one.
If a company ten minutes from you can be there sooner and the house has no cooling, take that option. We will say so on the phone rather than book you in and hope.

Local context
A rice-farming rail stop that the freeway turned into a suburb
Katy began in the 1890s as a stop on the Missouri-Kansas-Texas line, and the name came from the railway: the junction was known as the KT stop. The Great Galveston Hurricane of 1900 wrecked the early settlement, it rebuilt, and it spent the next half century as a rice-farming town. Incorporation came in 1945.
What changed everything was Interstate 10 reaching completion in 1966. Suburban expansion followed the freeway west, and the master-planned communities arrived from the 1990s onward.
Cinco Ranch is the largest of them. Newland Communities founded it in 1991, naming it for the five ranching families who sold the land, and it grew to around 8,092 acres and 15,098 homes over the following twenty-five years. Seven Meadows followed on 1,050 acres around the Meadowbrook Farms golf course, and Grand Lakes alongside it.
That thirty-year build window is the diagnostically useful fact. Unlike Pearland, where nearly everything went up at once, greater Katy has cohorts: early-1990s houses on their third system, early-2000s houses on their second, and 2010s houses on their first.
Working at this distance
What a long drive changes about how the work gets done
Distance is not only a scheduling issue. It genuinely changes what good service looks like, and it is worth being explicit about how.
Diagnosis has to be thorough the first time. A second trip is an hour of driving for both of us, so the visit needs to establish the whole picture rather than the immediate symptom: static pressure, temperature split, refrigerant condition, electrical draw and the state of the distribution. That is better practice anywhere. Out here it is not optional.
Parts get carried, not fetched. Describing the symptom accurately on the phone changes what comes on the van. The multi-trade side earns its keep. Where a job crosses into construction or electrical work, a company that covers all three avoids a second contractor making a second long trip out here. Remodels, additions and new construction is where that matters most.
